Records audit finds problems in FOI at the University of Memphis

The university gets a C-minus grade for transparency from a group of journalism students who performed a public records audit at university offices, the Daily Helmsman reports. TCOG Executive Director Frank Gibson is quoted:

According to Frank Gibson, executive director of the Tennessee Coalition for Open Government, a FOI letter and an extended period of time are not required to obtain “routine records” like the ones the students sought.

“There is no requirement that you have to request to see a record in writing,” Gibson said. “The auditors did more than required by law. It doesn’t make sense that the compliance wouldn’t be higher.”
